I have the same issue. In my case the issue is that the likewise service isn't starting on boot. If you drop to the a tty console (CTRL-ALT+F2) for tty2 and sign on with your local account and start the service: (username@hostname:~$ sudo service likewise start) and enter your local username's password.
Once the service is started; jump back to your X session with (CTRL- ALT+F7).
