Isn't it triggered by notify-osd? Sorry, I'm not a dev, but I was
wondering if we shouldn't file it against notify-osd.
E.g. the black bar always appears when I open empathy and I get the
message "You are now logged in as", which has nothing to do with
updates but rather with notifications.

Yes, keeps switching even after deleting those two files and "de,
nodeadkeys" is definitely set in the "Keyboard" GUI and the keyboard
works correctly with that setting. The only problem is the gdm setting.

Aha, that works. What got me confused is that an irc room is listed in
the window "Manage Favorite Chatrooms" even though it is not really a
favorite chatroom but just a current room you're in. So I thought that
there should an option somewhere in the "Favorite Chatrooms" list to add
it permanently

The Startup Manager does work for grub2 in Ubuntu. I can change the
settings there and they are properly reflected in grub.cfg and such.
It's just that the timer has completely disappeared from my grub2 menu
(the one I see right after startup).

This one is really weird. If I create new files to home/Desktop and do
touch Screenshot.txt
than that file will show up automatically on the Desktop. But if I do
touch Screenshot-1.txt
than that file will be in home/Desktop but does NOT show

Not sure if this is the same, but I can reproduce something similar very easily:
go to home/Desktop and type
"touch Screenshot-1.txt"
the file "Screenshot-1.txt" will not be on your Desktop! Dunno why, but
this is only with certain filenames, e.g. it works without the dash in
the filename.

It seems that this only happens with files called "Screenshot-?", but
they don't need to be image files, could be text files as well. That's
one of the weirdest things I have ever seen in Ubuntu. :)

I can confirm the issue with "Nautilus trashing" files when trying to
shutdown/reboot but I can click "Shutdown anyway" and it shuts down
fine. Not sure if these two things (Nautilus trashing message and
shutdown problems) are really related.
