Hm, didn't think about that. Makes sense though.
In case anyone else runs into this, my workaround is to delete
/etc/pam.d/common-* before running pam-auth-update. Still requires
special handling in the install scripts, but at least the config is in
debconf where it belongs.

I get complete freezes running Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit on an Intel Ivy
Bridge machine with integrated graphics.
For me, one way to induce a freeze is to randomly drag the map in Google
Maps, both in Firefox and Chromium. The freeze will occur within a few
seconds of dragging. This happens in Unity 3D

I am staying at an university and I use a static IP just like you do.
After following Ccampora's workaround, I am able to access the internet
fine. Hope it works for you too!
