This was an auto-upgrade (distribution upgrade) from 9.04 to 9.10 and the error message came and went before i could be sure exactly what it was. This is a best guess since I was watching the news on television rather than spending an hour watching the screen during the update. -- package emacs22

[Bug 501588] Missing sound after auto upgrade.

My upgrade manager came up with an offer to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 so I let it do it and most things work but my sound is gone. I did an install from scratch on another partition and the sound works fine. System preferences no longer even shows a sound option, just a volume control which has
