think that is what it made it crash.
Then I asked the tool to install the packager version, but it didn't

Hi,
It is an issue for me using official thunderbird from the repos on a
8.10. Thunderbird eats up memory and CPU after some time.

I want to confirm that I had the same problem. The solution given by
LGDN fixed the problem but it it is not obvious at all.
I upgraded from Karmic, my gnome-terminal was already configured with
transparency under Karmic.
