Switch user is pretty screwed up, and I don't think it is a video card
problem. I just tried it again to see if the problem I reported above is

Hi. Sometime ago I changed my Ubuntu installations for Debian Lenny.
Even three months ago, this fixed the problems with Virtualbox, and also
with some suspend resume issues. I strongly suspect that the 2.6.24
kernel of Hardy was the problem; since I moved to Debian I've been using
2.6.26. I
It's completely unusable for me. With an exchange account enabled, I get an
Evolution freeze within seconds. even when I am replying to an email from my
imap account. I get nothing very useful from console output if I run it from a
shell. It doesn't crash, it just freezes.

This is a weird bug.
On my machine, I discovered that I can predict that brightness level change by
using xbacklight.
I don't know how xbacklight works, but it does not follow the brightness
changes I get when pressing hotkeys.

For what it's worth, on that toshiba laptop, I'm now running Debian
Lenny, although I took kernel 2.6.26 when it was still only in Sid. With
this kernel, no problems with the backlight. Lenny has xserver versions
pretty similar to Hardy, so I think the kernel may be the source of the
problem.

I had two ugly problems. ONe, the mouse pointer flickered; I made a change in
the xorg.conf file because this was related to my nvidia card. I turned off
Hardware mouse.

Meanwhile, I can use putty to connect from Windows.
The host is a RedHat linux server.
