I can reproduce the error in the screenshot by the following steps:
1. Create a stopped job, for example by printing to a printer which is
turned off
2. Run "lpstat -o" in a terminal window, the job is listed

Your printer model was not recognized at all. system-config-printer has
simply assigned a text-only PPD file as it did not get any ID
information from the printer.
Please do the following:
Start the printer setup tool via
System -> Administration -> Printing
Remove the automatically generated p
Ubuntu 8.10 has switched to Firefox 3.x now. This new generation does
not need the PDF print queue any more. Choose "File"/"Print..." and in
the list of printers "Print to File". Then choose "PDF" as the "Output
format". You can freely choose the file name and the directory where to
put the file.

I have investigated the problem and it is a bug of evince. Both methods
shown in the initial posting lead to a PDF-to-PostScript conversion via
evince. Firefox is not able to display PDF files by itself and therefore

I could reproduce the bug creating a print queue pointing to a file
(Unfortunately, I do not get test printers from Xerox). There I tried my
suggestion of comments 5 and 6. And it works. With my Ghostscript-based
pdftoraster filter the Xerox Phaser 6100 with the Ubuntu-provided
package of SpliX 2.0
To keep the impact low on Intrepid, the SRU for Intrepid will be done as
follows:
The new pdftoraster filter will be added to the SpliX package, renamed
to pdftosplixraster. In addition there will be created a
splixraster.types file defining application/vnd.cups-splixraster without
auto-detection
Lex Ross, I have uploaded a fixed SpliX package for Intrepid into
-proposed. As soon as it arrives please test this package. At first try
whether you can print in color, to see whether this bug is fixed. Then
try also to print in grayscale as I have also added a patch from
upstream which fixes gray

Can Berk Güder, elleP, pitti, I have replaced the SpliX packages on
OpenPrinting, as there were built with a broken compiler. Now they
should work correctly. Please do your tests with these packages again.

I have uploaded a new package version, version 2.0.0~rc2-0ubuntu2.2 to
-proposed. This version automatically restarts CUPS when installing,
updating, or removing. As soon as this version gets approved, try it
out. Then your printer should work out of the box, without needing to
restart CUPS manuall
Unfortunately, the upstream source of HPLIP 2.8.10 is broken and cannot
be released as a package without a patch from HP. See bug 299011. As
soon as this problem is fixed the new HPLIP will get packaged.

There is at least a problem in system-config-printer, as system-config-
printer crashes. In addition it is possible that your printer got
crashed by another machine and so it is not possible to communicate with
it.

Tim, the program breaks in the is_C_locale() function which you must
have written. The name suggests that this function determines whether a
PPD is of C locale.
Problem for me is that PPDs cannot really be of C locale. They have a
language and if the default locale of the system cannot be determin

mention and then I have chosen to print to a file in the printing dialog
(first entry of the printer list). I have tried with both the PostScript
and PDF output formats and get black images in both cases. So the data
arriving at CUP

in them are OK. When you list all available PPDs with "lpinfo -m", are
there any file names with strange characters?
