Found the error.
The key line was "paperconf: unknown paper `iso_a4'".
Turns out that my /etc/papersize contained an invalid value "iso_a4". I changed
it to "a4", and then everything went fine.
It's funny; I pride myself in not being a complete idiot, but here's
some nice evidence to the contrary

value of "easy") revert by booting into a recovery shell in GRUB and simply
