I've used Ubuntu since 4.10 "Warty" basically upgrading my hardware
gradually over the years but I don't recall getting this particular
issue before.

Tested with kernel v3.7-rc2-raring and keyboard doesn't work at all. Not
even detaching and reattaching the keyboard works.
Just to be sure I'm doing this right: Do I need to install linux-image-
extra? Or, is simply testing with linux-image enough? I tested without
-extra.

The global menu and Unity launcher flickers a lot whenever there's any
sort of animation going on (clicking on launcher icons or indicators,
for example). Happens with Super+S too and even worse when I try moving
windows around in that view.

Not just Unity 2D but Unity as well has this. On my desktop at least it
appears to be the wallpaper showing through and not any sort of
"garbage".
Using gnome-tweak-tool to change themes, it appears this only affects
Ambiance and Radiance

I'm not getting the lzma error in bug #562312 although I am getting a
gzip error instead. Just to be sure I reformatted and made a fresh
LiveUSB with ~1GB of unused space and 2GB for casper-rw. Despite having
space available

I don't think so. How do I find out?
I don't get any errors or warnings whenever I install, remove, or update
with apt-get so I'm assuming that means everything is OK
