I have the same issue with my own USB Camera/Microphone under Gnome 2.41
in Ubuntu 8.10. The exact same fault occurs if I install both the skype
package or skype-static-oss package from the medibuntu repos.
I have had to disable pulseaudio to get any kind of sound recorded by my
USB microphone.

I just did not reboot after the last (about 6-7) packages-updates in 8.04
before upgrading to 8.10.

As said, the PPA driver only contains some of the upstream fixes since

Until then you could try the following if you want:
Install the latest Jaunty kernel package (2.6.28 based). Boot that kernel.

We need more information to get this solved. Try booting the new kernel without
the splash screen active (remove that option from the grub menu). If possible
try to get (take a picture or write down) the messages at the beginning. If the
terminal is not changed during boot (shift pg up/down migh
