Assuming that the volume change fixes Bug #178504 it's a different bug.
Playback with full volume can cause such problems too, but this bug is
not caused by high volume. The distortion here sounds like digital

I can confirm this in a way. I think the nature of the problem changed
slightly. With recent Feisty i set all audio outputs (and the capture)
to USB audio, which was plugged in after the system booted.
All new applications use the USB Headset correctly, but applet still
follows the default audio d

This problem doesn't exist in 1.3. I just compiled 1.3 and ran the same
commands i used to reproduce this with 1.2.1, everything works normally.
Is it too late to get a new version in Edgy? New version builds without
any packaging modifications (uupdate + build).
