not load the module for the Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast

Pablo, that version of evolution-data-server is no longer at the ppa
referred to in post #24. It has probably been removed because there is a
later version of evolution and its components available for Ubuntu 10.04
(Lucid). You might be better advised to update your 9.04 to 10.04 when
it is release

The Ubuntu kernel 2.6.31-14.48 is the Karmic Koala final iso version and
does not work with E169.
The kernel complied by Andy is 2.6.31-13.44 (post #15) and it has Ben's
patch applied -- it works for me.

trigger an upgrade to *-15.49 although the new packages are shown in
Synaptic after a reload in the what's new in repository section. If this
is widespread, it does not seem normal behavior and will make it harder

Has anyone, apart from Ben H, liro R-J (who has a e220) and me, tried

Apart from the first time you insert the e169, both modem and usb
storage seem to work flawlessly. (I'm using it now.)

As expected, the final release kernel for Karmic is 2.6.31-14.48, so no
Huawei modem connections for new or existing users (unless they find
this bug report and can figure out what to do). A pretty poor outcome,
given Ben's patch has been 'committed' for two weeks.

Richard, it's recognised by the kernel in about 30% of insertions on my
two computers. In those 30%, checking ls -la /dev/ttyU* return no file
or directory. After sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1
product=0x1001, network-manager connects without any prompting. This
still seems a kernel problem
Further to last post, connecting with wvdial has about the same success
rate for me as connecting with network-manager. The problem for me is
that insertion of the modem does not reliably create /dev/ttyU0.
Repeated insertions will eventually trigger /dev/ttyU0. Using sudo
modprobe usbserial vendor
Oops, in post #410, I meant the E169 modem is recognised by the kernel
in 70% of insertions, with 30% failing.

Using the Fn/F5 combination several time will bring back Bluetooth, but

Not directly, but I would assume so, as unchecking 'Available to all
users' still works with 3.5.0-25.
I have also tried your suggestion at #60, thanks. It works for me -- but
I have reverted to the simple 'uncheck' as there seems no downside in my
installations and any future fix should be with N
LO 4 installed as described in #45 is also working very well in 12.10,
integration with unity is as expected.

Oops, I was wrong at #47. Integration not as expected. I meant that
menus are working without the this bug but within the application window
and not integrated into unity. Star Man Aquarius at #49 is correct. (You
can't expect TDF to provide unity integration for Ubuntu.)

Hi Fransisco' I agree that latest kernel has improved the situation. It
is now possible to simple uncheck 'Available to all users' in NM to get
a clean shutdown. Beware if you create a new network connection, because
it defaults to 'Available to all users' checked. Before the latest

This is a kinda annoying bug in 11.10. If my connection drops-out
(fairly regular event), I can't reconnect without a reboot. I have tried
sudo killall modem-manager (worked in 11.04), disable networking and
sudo restart network-manager without effect. Am I missing something? Is
there an easy worka
I tried sudo restart modemmanager and that seems to work after waiting
30 seconds or so.
I wonder, though, if there is a dropout, why does this process not get
automatically triggered if auto connection is set in network manager?

I've worked around the dropout-then-mandatory-reboot problem in Oneiric
by using wvdial (NM still handles connection to router and on forwarding
to other devices). With wvdial, dropouts are reconnected and internet
access continues.
