Sadly, after persisting with Network Manager's inconsistent connections, I am taking Tiger99's advice (post #217) and using Betavine and wicd to get reliable, first-time connection.
I say sadly, because I want Ubuntu to work ootb. But this has been an up c**k from the beta version of Karmic. Sadly, too, because it seems that nobody from Canonical is paying attention to users.
