I am running fully up to date Gutsy server and am getting what I think
is the same problem as is reported here. After an indeterminate amount
of time and/or activity, the [lockd] process on the server goes from S
state to D state and all queries from clients result in messages such

install CDROM. This was upgraded to Feisty and thence Gutsy. However
only the 2.6.20-16.28 kernel of the 2.6.20-16 series runs on this

Manually creating a symlink may be the wrong approach but it is
currently the only really successful approach. Clearly it makes sense
to have a system that allows 4.1 and 4.2 to be installed at the same
time, however there is a blocking problem here:
gcc . -lgfortran
fails. I have lib
The lack of this file or some installed way round it should be
considered a blocker. I cannot link fortran code without manually
adding the symlink. It may be the wrong thing to do but it is the only
simple way of getting a link to work.
I assume this and Bug # 158673 are effectively the same.
On Gutsy 4.1 is the standard for gcc and g++ whereas the standard for
gfortran and gij is 4.2, so the linking is probably as it should be --
except that I am not sure why the alternatives system is not used to
handle the linking to versions, instead hardwired symbolic lionks are
used.

to switch to using Muine -- which I find to be an inferior user
interface -- I much prefer Rhythmbox. I guess though that this deserves

It seems as though Network Manager is as big a crock of as it ever
was -- at least for workstations that are either connected via eth0 or
not connected at all.
I purged Network Manager and added the appropriate lines to
/etc/network/interfaces and now when I boot I get the same messag

website) and the flashplugin-installer package from the Ubuntu
repository. I am using Ubuntu Karmic on a dual Xeon workstation, Dell
box with nVIDIA graphics card.
I removed all the nvidia packages, and then the skype and flashp
I am using Lucid anyway and keeping up to date on a daily basis. I have
been using the N900 in "modem mode" to get mobile Internet quite
successfully. I had not had reason to use the device in "mass media"

Which package is it that you are referring to as needing to be installed
to avoid the problem?
It would appear then that there is a bug, that the correct package
dependencies are not in place to ensure a correct user experience.

Karmic mounts the Nokia N900 in "mass storage" mode and allows browsing
of the phones filestore.
Lucid recognizes the device but does not mount it.
The protocol in both cases is:
1. Laptop switched on.
2. Phone switched on.
3. Plug USB cable in phone.

I am not sure "Invalid" is the right new status, more that no-one is

I got freezes with Jaunty, though not as badly as others. I found
Karmic only rarely froze up -- but it did occasionally, usually just at

The fix proposed by Fabrice at #5 deletes the Boost MPI material from
the distribution, which has to be the wrong solution to the problem.
The correct solution is surely to add the missing packages and correct
the dependency in the specification?
Ubuntu 10.10 should include a full Boost 1.43 or 1.
