1. it occured with 9.10 and after upgrade to 10.04 it's still there
2. with visual effects "normal", the problem is gone and with visual effects

Thank you for your answer. I would also consider myself as being
comfortable with source code. But to be honest, I am quite new to the
net-snmp world and have very little experience, so maybe the blame is on

I made mine 100MBs, which might be overkill.
All you have in there are your grub files (size negliable), and your
linux-mage thingys (kernels I think), which seem to be around 20MBs
each. If you don't clean it out you're going to run out of space, but
you generally only need one of them.

I had the same problem with Ubuntu 1004 netbook version on an Asus EeePc 900A.
I used the usb-creator.exe from the ISO image on Win XP.
The workaround from Joe Edmunds did help:

I would like to retract my previous comment, I have the system working
now with the driver supplied by the source forge e1000 driver project.
As the problem was completely unrelated to the driver, chances are this
