Just a general comment. My experience is that if that particular disk
had be used in or configured by a fakeraid controller before, that the
meta data written to the disk previously remains and the disk is
subsequently recognized as a raid drive! I made just that mistake

Also note: Neither grub-unstall nor update-grub identify and add other
OS's in raid partitions to grub.cfg. I mounted them to see if that would
make any difference - nope. This could be a bug against grub 2 except
that it first showed up with the latest kernel update (2.6.38-7.39)

This is so basic I feel like an idiot. For some unknown reason dmraid
was removed from my updated system which had it from inception, and
never included in the latest fresh install. Needless to say, without
dmraid both the latest upgrade and fresh install are not bootable. I
fixed it by installing

Well, back again. Problem still as described by original poster. Ubuntu
Software Center now opens fine but crash reports showed when I clicked
on Internet. Software center doesn't crash but there is no display of
Internet icons. Icons do appear in response to search. Otherwise stable.
