I have the same problem in Karmic i386. It did warn me that maybe port
443 was already being used, but since it only said "maybe" and then
there was a continue option, I choose Yes (continue). Then it locked up
as described above. I had to abort it with Ctrl+C.

Edit file /etc/modules: add line "apm" (no quotation marks)
Edit file /etc/default/grub: at GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT add "apm=power-off"

I spoke too soon. Bug isn't fixed. After I did the above (see last
entry) it powered off correctly a total of four times successively, then
reverted to hanging before power off. Odd. Back to square one.

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
change : GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to : GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet acpi=force"

to find `zfs mount -a` which at least filled out \var. \lib is a symlink

finger problems earlier -- seems `x86_64-linux-gnu` was there, just not
showing up in autocomplete. The `zfs mount -a` was the only extra step
needed for ZFS. Thanks to everyone for your help. I've loved using
Ubuntu for many year
Jsut realised that when I deleted the resolv.conf symlink and instead
created a file containing the single line `nameserver 8.8.8.8` in order
to get internet access from the broken system, that change remained once
