will not terminate until you actually send a line something AFTER vlc has
exited. cat will sleep in read(), regardless of VLC exiting or not. Hence your
command line is a bad example.

This could be a wrong input format (try rtp://@ instead of udp://@). But
it sounds like packet loss, i.e. overflowing socket receive buffers. You
can check with netstat.
Unfortunately, this would be a performance issue. Without access to the
stream, it's virtually impossible to track down and fix.
Using 0.9.2 to "restore" the integrated video output would simpliy be
PLAIN STUPID. It was disabled in 0.9.4 onward as the code involves
crash-prone race conditions. If you want the integrated video, keep the
latest VLC version and patch it.

I have been struggling with the Ubuntu devs to figure which package is
responsible for Qt4 on GNOME, but nobody would answer.
In any case, you have to be using the Qt4 interface, otherwise you would
have no tray icon. And hence you have to have an engine.

Looks like heap corruption in the PulseAudio plugin, but the stack trace
is incomplete. From the problem description, I would guess it's a buffer
overflow in the audio resampler. In that case, it should be fixed in VLC
1.1.0 already.

You're actually right:
# sudo sh -c 'echo $http_proxy'
shows nothing in Lucid anymore, while it worked fine in earlier version. Either
the sudo now clears the environment by default, or it stopped sourcing
/etc/environment.

I very much doubt it will be fixed even in 10.10 as far as VLC is
concerned. As already explained, we need to disable transparency to work
around a problem between Qt4 and XVideo. So there is simply no way we
can make the icon's background transparent.
