rebuilding amule against wxgtk2.8 fixes this for me.
I will attach the according debdiff which also contains the required patch for
wx2.8.
it also updates the package to the new motu maintainer spec.

I just tried the xcompmgr fix with xsever 1.2 and I would not say it
solves much. Though the window movement becomes smooth again as one can
expect, the drawing inside windows is still slow - opening firefox for
instance takes about 15s while producing 100% CPU load.

Binary package hint: gdm
right now gdmsetup is under Preferences->Login Window, but I think it
should be in the Administration category, since it requires sudo rights
to run and changes system wide settings.

*cough* fans are still of after resume *cough*
according to the comments in:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7122
you need to apply the patches from comment #38 and #69 in order to make
resume work.
** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu)
Status: Fix Committed => Confirmed
just tried it - after applying the two mentioned patches, everything
works fine.

after some more testing I found out that the "fan-problem-fix.patch" is
also needed - otherwise the fans dont behave correctly after resume from
disk. (skips state 3)
all patches can be found here:
