I did everything mention above -- still no sound. I began messing with
the sound settings only because I wasn't able to use Skype. Everything
worked fine in Ubuntu 8.04. When I did the upgrade to 8.10 I lost my
sound-capture. When I tried to fix the problem, I've lost all sound.

Sorry, I recently migrated from MS Windows - very limited knowledge at
this point. For whatever reason, the upgrade (from Ubunty 8.10 to v. 9)
locked up during the download portion, almost could not recover when I

Hello Michael...
This is the first time I have been contacted (I am quite happy that you
contacted me).
Here's what I did. I got tired of messing around with the problem, so I
ordered a disk w/ 8.10. I backed up my files, and re-installed.

you can lock your session. After unlocking, the icons will reappear.
