Interestingly it's failing with only one of our back-end webservices,
which runs tomcat 6.0.24
wget works without any extra options
curl works if I supply -3

allowed in my tomcat server's SSL connector definition, made the problem
go away.
curl now works on the openssl 1.0.0 clients without -3

I had the same symptoms (deauthenticating from ... by local choice
(reason=3)) and have managed to find a solution on a Thinkpad x61s using
wlagn driver.
I had the exact same problem on Ubuntu 10.04 after an update, and then
again after wasting hours going to 10.10.
Updating wpasupplicant to late
It's worth noting that in my case, the strange part is that the problem
cropped up only days after the erroneous AP was turned on; and three
other notebooks (heavy network users) on the premises had no problems
(macos, windows, and ubuntu 10.04 on a thinkpad x200). Not that I expect
my bad network
