The kernel from intrepid-proposed did not fix this problem.
I followed the steps in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed and ran
# apt-get install -t intrepid-proposed linux
# shutdown -r now new kernel
This is the version that was installed:

wired and wireless connections. Even attempting to run wpa_supplicant

driver connected to a WPA2 network. I have not tested using just plain
