Same here! I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my LG P1 Express laptop with
ALC883 codec and still no sound. I have attached the report generated
from system testing application.
I have been having this problem for over 2 years now and none of the
various kernels I have used solved this issue.

I have the same problem (and it really annoys me a lot!) on a laptop LG
P1 Express with an ATI Mobility X1400.
When there is a clean install everything work fine. When the driver is
installed, then the whole system is ruinned.

Nice research Phil! I wish I had some time to check it out myself but I
am too busy to do so. It's sad though, that even though it has been
reported as a bug, nobody showed any interest. Anyway, maybe I ll find
some time and read the code myself and find out a solution.

I did a new fresh installation, with Karmic final release today, and I
ve noticed a few things: When I install it with the kernel 2.6.31-14 the
soundcard is detected but there is no sound from speakers. After the
upgrade to 2.6.31-15 kernel there is no soundcard detected! The odd
thing is that when
Ok, fixed the problem with the disappearing of the soundcard. It has to
do with an analog modem that resides in the soundcard. When I installed
the driver, then the card disappeared. Uninstalling it fixes the
problem.
But still no sound from speakers.

I did so but still I have no sound from the speakers. But through
headphones, I can hear it loud and clear! In previous versions of

I am having the same problem with a USB HDD Apacher Steno 320GB. No
drives are mounted, and the system's load average boosts up 200%! It
sucks!
