Well, this is a bug in gnome-power-manager.
The /proc battery remains registered in hal all the time, but changes status
from present to not present.
it makes sense, since /proc file _is_ present anyway.
gpm detects, when it becomes not present, and changes icon accordantly.
But, the /sys batter
@hyperair, this does actually work, gpm works correctly when it is configured:
"only display icon when charging or discharging".
Since when you pull the battery out it can't do nether, and gpm
understands it, it hides the icon. what gpm doesn't understand let me
repeat, is that it was removed.

interpid, it causes network manager to bahave wierdly

It turns out that if wireless connection is marked "System setting", which I

I have acer aspire 5720's Crystal Eye.
I noticed that if I run xawtv, it doesn't freeze like that with kernel messages

This is clearly a gstremer alsa mixer bug.
I found a workaround, which is to switch to OSS mixer in sound settings
OSS mixer is just an emulation on top of alsa, but gsteremer doesn't have this
bug
in oss mixer code.

I mean it doesn't prevent screen saver from running.
I used dbus-monitor to confirm futher that it doesn't use Inhibit call to gnome
screen saver.
On the other hand when I use totem Inhibit is called.

This is reproducible on all my systems.
Bug can be reproduced by going to any site with live stream, watching it
till screen saver kicks in
and I use ubuntu 8.10

I have jaunty, and I use -git kernels anyway.
What I eventually found out that I am not affected by this bug, my printer

Well, it appears that there is no standard interface in linux to query 'hidden'
attribute.
(in fact there is - in unix world all hidden files start with '.')
Meanwhile, a solution would be ability to manually hide files.
How about simple config file/gconf entries to say which files to hide, and
I don't use windows much, but I have to use it for my assigments, and I
hate all these registry files in my home folder
