My problem has two symptoms and it occurs since I am running Lucid Lynx.
Up to Karmic, it was fine.
Symptom 1:
When trying to switch to the TTYs using Ctrl-Alt-F1..F6, seemingly nothing
happens except that the keyboard and mouse

Laptop. The problem occurs on one of the PC's and the Laptop.

When I try to start

I can not tell about Ubuntu 14.04 because I switched to Arch Linux in between.
But I think the version used there (1.6.10) is probably newer as in all Ubuntu
releases :-)
And in that version, the bug still occurs.

I have a soluton, at least for XFCE:
(translated from the German version, so wording may be inaccurate)
Go to
XFCE Menu -> Settings -> Settings -> Startup and Sessions -> Programs started
automatically
and activate "Policykit Authentication Agent".
Maybe there is something similar in LXDE.
But
Looks like it's the same problem. Maybe you could add a bit bug heat if
you add yourself to the list of affected persons (the green link right
below the heading "This bug affects ...").

a complete removal (including config files) of all VDR packages and re-
installation, the install of vdr-plugin-xineliboutput succeeded.

I just have noticed something new that could help:
Thunar just crashed while a cron script renamed a file in an open folder.
This indicates that updating the folder view is the problem, not the rename
operation.

I have found the solution by happenstance:
(I am using XFCE in German, so maybe the wording I describe here is not 100%
accurate)
In the XFCE settings menu -> Session management -> Automatically started
applications, there is an Item "Policykit Authentication Agent".
This was unchecked. Re-check
