I have done a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install and then I have installaed the
mainline kernel suggested, i.e. 4.6.0-040600rc6-generic.

I have upgraded the BIOS and it was a BIG issue...
Ubuntu 13.10 never found the network card again; no way of reloading the
forcedeth driver, no solution.
I had to completely reinstall the O/S (this time I installed Mint) and I

I've run the alternate installer directly from a mastered CD-ROM and not
from a bootable USB flash drive.
With the CD-ROM the Maxtor HD is successfully recognized and I managed
to install Maverick on it.
It's very strange that the SAME ISO ran from a USB flash drive do not
find the Maxtor HD!
