The best way as far as I know is to disable checking by editing
/etc/fstab as a root and modifying the digit in the last column.
Replacing a 1 or a 2 by a zero should avoid the error.

The file /lib/udev/rules.d/40-pilot-links.rules comes from the udev
package. So it is a udev bug if the symlink is not correct.
Two remarks:
- you should/shall use "usb:" instead of "/dev/pilot" for USB Palm devices
- the Debian udev package do not provide the
/lib/udev/rules.d/40-pilot-links.rul
I guess it would be a better idea to correct/patch java to:
- also search the library in /lib
- search for libpcsclite.so.1 instead of libpcsclite.so (without the .1)

A possible solution to the impossibility to launch postgres : you should
check that the postgres user is still a member of the sss-cert group. I
botched the group membership by mistake and wasn't able to launch the
server with the same error as above.
Restoring the right membership solved the issu

I dropped the jpilot syncmal from Debian. So it is no more available in
Ubuntu either.
You can install the syncmal package from an older Ubuntu. That may work.
Or you can use the plucker package instead of the (proprietary) AvantGo.
