As a fix i used Alex Willmers suggestion except i just commented the
line "virtual hres vres" where hres and vres would be some value. That
worked for me.

Can I also confirm that the same has happened to my Audigy 2 ZS card. It
seems the device could be wrong as when I launch "alsamixer" in the
terminal it shows "Realtek ALC850" channels not my "Audigy 2 ZS"
channels.

I have booted to the previous stored kernel being 2.6.20-12-generic and
all is fine again. This confirms an issue with the latest
2.6.20-14-generic kernel.
