Dean, unfortunately "royalty-free" is not good enough. The image needs
to have a license that explictly allows certain things. For example, the
license must allow modification, and re-distribution of modified
versions. Without a license, such things are not allowed.

The GTK user interface actually does attempt to do that: it shows you a
list of all the things it wants to do and lets the user decide to ignore
some of the stuff. The user can also not click the "Cleanup" button.
Thus, to see the obsolete packages, they can start system-cleaner-gtk,
and click on "
Unfortunately, there is currently no way for system-cleaner to know
which packages are obsolete (because they are no longer available via
apt-get), and which ones are third-party packages installed outside of
apt. Thus the bug is valid, but we can't fix it for now.

I agree that not purging packages leaves some cruft. The amount is
typically fairly small, though.
Purging instead of removing carries the risk of the user accidentally
removing configs they care about, and I'd like to be very careful about
that. Thus, at least for intrepid, system-cleaner won't p

I hope I am testing this the right way: I created a USB stick with usb-
creator, and booted by using F6 to add the "persistent" option to the
kernel command line. The system was booted into busybox in initramfs.

erwinsoo, unfortunately I cannot reproduce this. I just installed Ubuntu
intrepid RC version in a fresh virtual machine, and started System
Cleaner. It did not find any cruft at all, no packages listed in the
user interface. I think something else went badly wrong in your system.

name did not change, but some of the files in it did. Particularly
/var/lib/system-cleaner got renamed to /var/lib/cruft-remover. This

The most efficient way to do this is to click on the first piece of

Attached is a small Python program to display the problem: apt.Cache
does not support '"foo" in cache' even though it tries to be a dict. The
output of the program should be four times True, now the second line is
False. I think that is a bug.
My error, that dpkg command needs a "|cat" added to the end so that dpkg
doesn't cut off data because of terminal width. Please do the following:

I was told that System -> Administration is too big already, and that we
should strive to reduce its size rather than make it bigger. That's
probably true, even if unfortunate for system-cleaner.
I am, of course, happy to move system-cleaner anywhere consensus
dictates. It's just one line in .desk
Dean, a-ha! I think there are two reasons why you're having trouble
updating from the PPA:
1. Your sources.list says intrepid, not hardy.
2. I am an idiot and have uploaded to hardy in my PPA, instead of intrepid.
I've now uploaded version 1.10 to my PPA, for intrepid. I have also made
sure syste
This no longer happens, so I'll mark this as fixed.
Grub never finishes installation (or at least not in 9 hours), but
that's another problem.

It seems that nm-applet can get confused when its icons disappear
during an upgrade. This happened while testing an upgrade from
Xubuntu hardy to intrepid beta candidate ISO, but is probably not
restricted to Xubuntu.

To reproduce, just install Xubuntu hardy under kvm, upgrade to current
hardy, reboot, and start the upgrade to intrepid.
