The screen brightness does not change, even though a small message over the
panel about the percentage responds. The percentage can be adjusted up or down
by pressing the brightness keys (f1 and f2) however, the actual illumination
stays the same

I get a similar error on a macbook pro. The screen does not wake up
after closing and re-opening the lid. The machine is awake, though, and
can be reached via SSH at that time. Closing the lid a second time does
not appear to affect the machine in anyway, it still keeps running.
