I see failures in VLC trying to open files and prefs while VLC snap
seemingly uses devmode since this is on Debian "testing".

The same happens with VLC snap on Ubuntu 18.04 beta.
LC_ALL=C XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=KDE snap run vlc -vvv results in the same
UI issues when opening a file dialog, and the attached apparmor denials
in messages.txt, with attached snap.vlc.vlc.

I should also add that this is only activating when
XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=KDE is set and when Qt5 tries to launch kio/ksysoca
to show proper KDE file open dialogs.

Their conclusion is that perl is broken on current Ubuntu.

I've updated the machine to the linux-hwe kernels, and experienced an
almost instant crash when booting. Nothing is shown on the VGA output,
so no stack traces are available.
I've tried booting a few kernels with the following results:

After adding the debug symbols repository as described in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Debug%20Symbol%20Packages, trying to install
gcc-6-dbgsym results in:
root@ub1610-thresh1:~# apt-get install gcc-6-dbgsym

As a temporary workaround for tools like waagent -deprovision+user, I
can suggest rm -f /etc/sub{g,u}id{-} before running the waagent.
Hope it'll get fixed sooner than later because this really is a huge
problem.
