When writing a lot of files (> 1GB) to a USB hard disk, Linux will use
up all the memory and start killing processes, making the computer
highly unstable. Below is the kern.log. It had no swap by incident.

It's an HP Proliant DL385 AMD Opteron™ model 265 1.8GHz - 1MB L2 dual-

2G RAM. No swap originally but now has 2.5G swap (since then the problem

I am seeing this behavior in Kubuntu 8.04. Both krecordmydesktop and
gnome-sound-record work fine. Only krec doesn't. Below is the output of

I am also having the same problem (syslogd was killed or quit itself).
The last line in syslog.0 is "exiting on signal 15".
This is a very serious problem as postfix stops sending mail if syslogd
is not there.

which contains Chinese, kpdf will fail to display most of the Chinese
text, while kghostview will work fine.
Note that kpdf does work on some other PDF files containing Chinese,

I am having the same problem. I am running Ubuntu 6.06.2 LTS. It only
happens due to recent kernel upgrades (2.6.15-54-server). It seems to
happen often during backup with rsync. The log messages are shown below.

I am having the same problem. With kernel 2.6.32-25.45 it works fine,
but with kernel 2.6.32-28.55 it fails with the "VFS: Cannot open root
device" message. Adding rootdelay doesn't fix the problem.
