I'm having the same issue. The black screen problem showed up somewhere
in the last week of January, as I documented having to use the nomodeset
boot parameter in the course of investigating another bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1537308).
The nomodeset was a valid worka

I saw one report that said that disabling a PCI controller solved the issue
as well, but I don't know what in my laptop could be running on that,

seem to be much activity on it from anyone other than Andrea. I
couldn't find a way to respond to that thread to let them know that
there are more affected us

Sorry for the delay, my laptop decided it didn't want to use the monitor
when booting from a live CD for some reason, took me a while to figure
out a way around that.
I was able to boot into the Jan 31 nightly, and recreated the problem.
Screen came back on and xev logged a Control_L less than 5 m
