When connecting Alcatel x030 HSDPA modem the system mounts it as a USB
stick instead of mounting it as a Broadband modem.
This problem is happening in Ubuntu 8.10. I think is happening with all
broadband modems which include software on it. Thus, the system thinks
it is a USB

No, it means that I'll upgrade to 10.04 and then verify if the bug has gone.

I have the same error after upgrading to 10.04. This error was not
present in 9.10.

Well, the connection seems to be working in 10.04. However, I faced some
strange issue.
After upgrading to 10.04 I tried to connect the modem and the system mounted it
as a USB stick. So, following your advices I tried to unmount it to see if
after that the system would see the card as an HSDPA
