use Suse. The problem appeared to be related to the change in XORG and
lack of supprt in the early releases of fglrx and configuration tools.

I've also tried multiple burns cd's etc booting either with standard
options or with nopic nolapic safe graphics etc makes no difference.
Boot process passes grub screen starts to boot and Usplash freezes at
about 10% and stays there indefinitely.
Xubuntu i386 works fine.

I take your point but the standard resolution tools don't give you the
ability to control dual displays i.e whether you have an extended
desktop or cloned display.
I thought this tool was a great improvement over the native gnome and
XFCE tools and it seems like a step backward to take it out.

Whilst this is vastly improved in final with certain types of mouse and
touchpads it can still be very annoying. I'd personally prefer it to
scroll slowly and be patient.

Just to confirm turning off APIC and or all other API functions still

Neo v1 with ATI Radeon 9700 pro.

Just to update I have tried the nomodeset parameter previously (sorry
hadn't put that in the description)
The OS does load and you get visuals but its using the software
