This issue (maintenance shell "control-D") is gone with the updated
kernel from the download site... over-reported "kernel error upon
upgrade" stems from my ignorance of the need to remount the SD-card for
kernel upgrade... duh... ;-)
Now I just need to hunt down a way to restart the SD slot...

Perhaps a suggestion unmount the /boot partition after the fsck...
perhaps add a prompt to re-insert SD card during kernel updates...
I'm cool with it in a manual sense... Ubuntu however enjoys doing it
better and more intuitive... ;-)

2010 from the lucid lynx mini.iso.

manually performing swapon -a.

Uncommenting the #/dev/mapper/sec-swap line did resolve the issue and
started the swap on boot. Perhaps the issue is with multiple packages.
Main difference on the desktop is the use of lvm2.
