With cold boot: Swap was not started on the laptop (i386) at boot.
Swap was started on the desktop (amd64) at boot. /etc/fstab on the laptop (i386) was reverted back to installation default configuration. /etc/fstab on the desktop (amd64) was modified, swap line was uncommented as per previous comment.
