I was going to use a ppa, but since I'm still figuring out launchpad I
couldn't get it to accept the changes file I was using. I think I have
figured out the problem and I'll use that in a future.
The fix is right, because it fixes the problem, and so far we can
consistently reproduce the problem

installed gvfs package from the previous comment and forgot to install

The specific functionality that is required to make this happen is "soft
buttons". This came as part of Chase Dogulas' work in Ubuntu 12.10. The
change is too drastic to backport, but it will be available in 12.04.2
when the backport stack lands.

Sounds like a regression with the graphics driver. We have to figure out
if it's loading the fglrx or radeon drivers by default. From there we
can proceed to figure out what went wrong.
Interestingly, the pre-install project for these machines disable
updating of the driver. I suppose they found t
