The first bad version is gvfs-1.8.0-1. This regression is caused by 05_shared_libdaemon.patch. It isn't exactly clear to me why this is, but if I take out the patch and build with the libgvfscommon0 package as was done in gvfs-1.8.0-0ubuntu1 and earlier, I can successfully mount the phone.
