I installed KDE 4.2.4 from the PPA repository. I don't know if this was
a bugfix since 4.2.2 or if "reinstalling" KDE kicked something in the
pants.
There still appear to be some issues that didn't magically go away in
Jaunty for Kubuntu.
1. OpenOffice still does not theme nicely. There is another bug

black screen. ctrl-alt-f1 gave me a command prompt; ctrl-alt-f7
displayed the desktop.
That was oddity number 1.

Tested amd64 image with similar results.
- after booting, got a garbled screen (looked like it was vertically scanning);

I am also experiencing this. I have looked around for any kind of log

I started having this problem a while ago after an update. I was hoping
that some subsequent update would fix it, but, alas, no such love.
Is there a system fix for this, or do we just need to know this piece of

I was having a very similar problem. If I had *only* the GLX module
loaded, my screensaver would not work, and the "Monitor & Display"
module would not load. I now have this in my modules section and all is
well:

I just read through the Xorg.0,log and noticed that it complained about
the resolution at 1280x768. It smartly corrected it.
I just tried dropping the resolution to 800x600 with 16 bit color and it
is still doing the same thing: horizontally "humming" and there is a
thick black line about 1-inch

Educate me -- why did that work and "shutdown now" did not? Is

The system in question has a built-in sound card and a PCI card. The problem
was that the PCI card (my preferred) was not set to the default sound card in
ALSA. I searched the web for the issue and found this:

I was having this problem until I did the following:
1. move the ~/.asoundrc to my ~/tmp folder
2. move the ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf to my ~/tmp folder
3. move the /etc/asound.conf to /etc/asound.conf.bak
4. I had TWO "audio" groups. I deleted one. (I deleted the wrong one first,
so I had to add i
Adding my comment to add weight. I found this error in the course of
trying to understand why vmware player will spontaneously die (big error
message and exit). My system runs fine otherwise, but this, of course,
is cause for a little concern.

I forgot that I'd copied the dist-upgrade directory before my fun with
the normal apt-get approach. Here are the three files from that
directory as they were immediately after the issue I described.

As previously stated, after uninstalling nvidia-glx and running
difference combinations of "sudo apt-get -f install" and "sudo apt-get
dist-upgrade" I eventually got all the packages.
I did find that nvidia-glx, nvidia-glx-new, nor nvidia-glx-legacy would
