Some times, letters will disappear or be recolored and icon graphics
will have lines going through them. When the mouse is moved over text
areas, which letters are visible and which disappear changes. The
background picture of the desktop does not seem to be affected.

Hello,
the graphics card with which I had this issue later broke. The issue did not
persist with the new graphics card (ATI Radeon HD5770). It is possible that it
was a hardware error with the graphics card starting to intermittently fail
which was only visible in Ubuntu.

I am experiencing the same issue when I plugged my seagate backup plus
in USB 3.0 port and not issue if plugged in usb 2.0. OS: Scientific
Linux, kernel 2.6.32 .
And other important observation is the issue is same in windows 7.

Can you use the usbreset program which is mentioned in my earlier post ?
So that You can confirm that recent kernels have fixed the issue.
