Had the same problem with kernel 2.6.24-21-generic when it was in the
proposed updates. Gave bug report then about the issue. The kernel
update I got a few minutes ago to 2.6.24-21-generic has again disabled/
knocked out/OS no longer recognizes the sound card. I don't have a dell
(intimated above t
dmesg|grep snd provides no output on my computer. Sound works fine with
2.6.24-18. Oh well, I'll keep using that. By the way, a friend of mine
has a computer with virtually the same hardware and the motherboard and
graphics card are exactly the same, but he has sound on kernel

OK, I was probably a bit quick to say the sound issue was solved. I do
now have sound, but I also have two 'speaker' icons in the upper panel.
So there is something still not quite right - I certainly don't have two

I have exactly the same thing happening on 9.04 alpha 3. It is
intermittent, probably happens about 50% of the time. Contact me if you
want any further information. However mine does not stop when xstarts.
On shutdown, have to foa hard shutdown as it hangs and shutdown process

Just tried the self extracting installer from the HP linux printer site.
Get error "python-devel not found". I have attached a screenshot. I
assume the missing dependency is why the printer says it "may not be
connected". The system is updated with the latest updates.

I had issues with the atheros card at one stge, but followed the
instructions from ubuntu geek - I think I used method 2. Since then my

because I [eventually] tracked down the likely cause of ekiga not
working to a hardware issue with the modem/router from my isp, which I
have been unable to port forward ??? locked by isp ??? Sorry I can't
help.
Decided to reinstall karmic, now am getting stuck at the busy box shell
upon boot. The live cd goes to the desktop and allows a complete
install, upon rebooting it enters busy box. Might try the alternate cd
and see if that works. This computer has run all distro's from 7.04 -->
9.04 without issue

Using 9.10 alpha 3 - installed compizconfig-settings-manager and enabled
Visual effects under System --> Preferences --> Appearance. Went in to
the settings manager and enabled cube and cube rotation and water
effects. None of the effects work, but they do on the installation
The cube now works, but only by clicking the change desktop icons in the
lower left panel. Previously, I could rotate the cube via the scroll
wheel on the mouse. That method doesn't work, although it works fine on
jaunty. Water effects doesn't work either.

Found that my entire /etc/apt/sources.list was wiped. Typed in sudo gedit
/etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/fstab was on the page. I have deleted that and
replaced it with a backup of /etc/apt/sources.list and now seem to be able to
upgrade again. At this point system seems to be working OK.

I am still stuck in tty1 - I will attach some .txt log files I obtained
by accessing /var/log via my karmic installation. Hope they help. Some
of the log files may include some of my (poor) attempts to fix the
problem. One other issue is that nvidia-glx-185 package will not
uninstall - I suspect th

Thank you for your suggestion. I however use gnome and thus gdm - it doesn't
start at all. Typing sudo start gdm gives the output
gdm start/running, process 1781
It does nothing else, except go to the next command prompt. tty2 did not do any
better - same message, except the process was 1923 in
start x does not do anything either, other give a whole lot of error
messages, which I can't remember off the top of my head. I have also
tried to reinstall xserver xorg and a number of other things - but so
far nothing has looked close to sorting things out. I will keep doing
updates and hope that
