I have the exact same problem in jaunty.
It also happens (nm-applet refusing to start)
if a kde user starts knetworkmanager first (on the same laptop).
Several kde users can run knetworkmanager simultaneously.
So I ended up switching from gnome to kde.
But it turns out that only the knetworkmana
An addition to my previous post:
No changes to my statements concerning nm-applet.
But the problem with knetworkmanager (or plasma networkmanager applet)
can be avoided. Just in case somebody is interested:

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: compiz
Compiz uses 100% of a CPU when an amarok process is running.
With just k3b, kmail, ktorrent, and a few konqueror windows, it is still 10%.
All processes involved, other than compiz, are idle.
I noticed this while logging in (to the home machine) f
I have 4 users (family) on my home machine - the other 3 use kde.
Almost every day the machine (3GHz core 2 duo) comes to a crawl
when 2 or more nspluginviewer processes
(presumably started by konqueror) use up all cpu time.
Similar problems have been reported by many since July 2007.
The solution
I just came back here, after 1.5 years, out of curiosity.
So the screen is locked before gdmflexiserver is finished asking questions,
and this is not an issue for the ordinary user?
It had happened to me with both gdm and kdm.
In case the bug is still open and bugs somebody:
My "solution" was to
Switching via gdmflexiserver to another user
(running kde) and later switching back to my desktop
(gnome, metacity) shows the gdmflexiserver dialog still up
and both keyboard and mouse are frozen.
Killing gdmflexiserver and a screen saver
(from another console) frees up the keyboard,
but there is s

I have encountered in 15+ years of using Linux.
A bug in a relatively simple program stays for 3/2 years
and severely impacts the usability of an entire desktop environment
on any multi-user system that depends on wireless access.

Five months ago I switched from gnome to KDE because of this problem.
The KDE version of the nm-applet worked fine, and still does.
How about asking the KDE people how they do it?

I found that you can at least active the menu by doing the following:
Create the file /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu
.enable-hibernate.pkla
The file must have the following content:
[Re-enable hibernate by default]
Identity=unix-user:*
Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
Same here for the last 3 years on on Dell Studio 14z with NVIDIA® GeForce®

Have no illusions that this will ever get fixed.

Just checking back, every 6 months, ...
I suppose it is still a "feature" of the nm-applet
(after 2 years it cannot be considered a bug)
that it shall start only for the user that logs in first,
and that the others deserve to be kept in the dark.
(Not to mention being offered any functionality.)
