I think the original reporter tried to backup to a sshfs mount which
doesn't work because sshfs doesn't support hard-links. But the SSH mode

'copy links' will replace all symlinks with it's target folder. 'copy
unsave links' will only replace those symlinks which point outside the
included folders or are absolute (start with '/'). So yes, BIT will do
this with 'copy links'.

This could have been a filesystem which doesn't support hard-links. Take a look

This is because 'gksu' is missing in Ubuntus official repository

What kind of dialog does pop up to ask for your sudo password? Is it a
Terminal window or a graphical dialog?
Where is your config located at the moment? ~/.config/backintime or
/root/.config/backintime ?
Official repository uses 'su-to-root' to start backintime as root. This
will fallback to sud
Glad to hear that you could fix it. I'm aware of anacron starting to
soon. There is already bug #1332979 with a patch. But I'm also about to
ditch anacron completely and integrate it's function into BIT. Didn't
decide yet.

That's right. There are two problems:
1. the Makefile.template patch
(http://sources.debian.net/src/backintime/1.0.36-1/debian/patches
/install-docs-move.patch/) doesn't work. Non of those files are included
in the package.
2. common/config.py line 132 (self._DOC_PATH =
'/usr/share/doc/backintime
Please report this in a new bug report filled against
