using the live cd, i mounted my original dapper /boot (which lives at
/dev/sda1) into /mnt, and edited my grub/menu.lts, added an entry for my
knot2 system and it booted ok.
I also tried to install without formatting my /boot partition, but the
installer refused. is there any particular reason for
/var/crash/_usr_bin_gok.1000.crash

Happily using Mac OS X for printing, so I'm not bothered with Evince
anymore. But thanks anyway to those who have been trying to fix it, and
sorry about that to those who have been trying to use it.
