I've just tried the Ubuntu 8.10 Release Candidat and the bug is still there.
After the following lines I've got several "green" screens and then nothing.

I've tested using an OpenVPN connection on latest 8.10. Reconnecting to

Removing compiz did not solve the problem for me. As a workaround,
disabling DRI in xorg.conf seems to allow a user to log in normally.
Compiz will not work in this case and rendering is noticeably slower.

After what happened with the previous bug, I made sure all my local
installations were properly removed, so I do or did not have any local
installations of gvfs.
The bug did fix itself after I reinstalled the nautilus and gvfs

Jos and Christian, I think this is a new bug. The symptoms are the same
with kacpid or kacpi_notify consuming all CPU but it appears after
resuming from suspend (to ram or disk) and not while running the system.
It is also interesting that at all three of us have Dell laptops. I

I can confirm this behavior, I also have an ATI graphics controller:
ATI Technologies Inc M24 1P [Radeon Mobility X600]
and have not been able to run any graphic intense java applications in Ubuntu
8.04.
The good news is that java graphics in Intrepid Beta works fine for me,
so I will just stick
Well, maybe I was too quick to say that it works "fine" in Intrepid. I
still cannot get java to use the OpenGL-pipeline, but at least
performance is much better. The example Lucas provided actually looks
smooth in Intrepid Beta, but draws quite a lot of CPU. Far from perfect,

hi I have installed

and now I can use joystick as mouse and key pressed don't restart x
only little problem I found is on smc menu the joystick "moused" make conflict
and only good input method is from keyword
I have added
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I'm sad ... the solution work only on Intrepid, on hardy Xorg.log say :
(WW) fglrx(0): Option "AccelMethod" is not used
and the problem persist ... I have tried also xorg-driver-fglrx-envy but with
same result.

There are so many Firefox-3.0 bugs that are very similar to this bug
that you report, but arent the same so we cant mark it as a duplicate.

You can cut the "screen" section and replace with it the on in your
xorg.conf file. Erase the lower resolutions if you can. Then the problem
could be solved.
