If the cable works in windowsXP, does it make sense to replace the cable
with another? I'm using the Sony firewire cable that came with the DV
camcorder. Also, my issue and environment are posted
I found another firewire cable (generic brand) and to my surprise, my DV camera
now works!
Conclusion: The firewire cable can work in Windows and not work in linux.

Thanks Scott for your reply. I connected the WD250gb drive and there was no
response. I rebooted and has worked for all of the operations I've run so
far (rsync). I will add to the bug report the dmesg output as soon as it

I was able to remove the files in the /tmp directory, but this did not
solve the issue. Each time, I try to update with update manager, I'm
prompted to provide a password. Then a new window pops up requesting to
either "authenticate" or "cancel" the update. These buttons are
unresponsive and ?cause
The symptoms are the same. I will follow the noted bug.

I have an external harddrive that connects using USB or eSATA. The USB
connection works well and automounts when the device is plugged in.
When I use the eSATA connection, I have to restart the computer in order
to have the drive recognized and useable.
