So, how does a mere mortal with Intrepid, like myself, fix this issue?
Since I upgraded to Intrepid this plugin has stopped working altogether.
If I start the plugin manually from a terminal it immediately kills the
Evolution (if it was running, of course) and if it is started prior to
running Evol

Okay, after trying several times i finally opened it and got to the link
to a patch. The patch is written to patch one of the source code files,
hence pretty much useless to me since I'm not about to compile my own
version of Evolution. I wonder why the patch hasn't been picked up
already by Jaunty
I can't even open that link to "gnome-bugs #564465". I would like to
apply that patch, but how? It says it's fixed by a "Patch by Milan
Crha", but that's not what my Jaunty thinks. Is anyone else having the
same problem of not being able to open that link? How do I apply that
patch then?

Good points racb, I think the startup script should test on "start" the
existence of the process and the lock. If process is not running it
should remove the lock before starting a new process. Also file should
be removed on "stop".

Creating a "fix" that only removes the file on boot is not a fix
I have taken over this issue from Amad and have looked into the code.
The file exclusive create approach is a bad substitution for real
locking. I have a patch done that I am in the process of building a PPA
to test, this uses re

As far as I understand the impact to the user was that a lock file from
a previous run prevents ebtables to run again.
Use real locking in ebtables (LP: #1645324)
- Prior use of locking by file exclusive access is inadequate
because if ebtables crashes or is killed it will leave a
stale lock file behind which then blocks new ebtables from
running.
