I switched the computer in question to a file server, so now it's
running Precise server version and text only mode. I haven't seen the
issue yet, but it's only been a week since the switch. I'm sorry, I'm
not able to switch to other kernels for testing at this time.

file, so that Akonadi wouldn't start. If I see that again when I upgrade

1. it affects the display of menus and other GUI elements for Emacs and
Evolution when using the default KDE theme

You're making it sound like I messed it up myself. The point is that my
KDE config was just fine until the upgrade from Lucid and replacement of
konqueror with rekonq messed it up by putting rekonq in the fourth place
of HTML-handling apps even though konqueror was the default prior to the
upgrade.
Adding kubuntu-restricted-extras fixed the random access issue. I'm not
sure which additional package made the difference, but arguably it
should have been installed by the "installed missing packages" dialog,
which I used to add the "sequential-only" MP3 playback.

under KDE. This causes Emacs
to run without a style applied, which looks really ugly. Other GTK application
do not have this problem.
