I have upgraded to oneric, and this problem appears to no longer happen
(or at least, hasn't happened yet).
I suspect this was driver related, and given the fact that oneric gives
me about 600 fps as opposed to 60 fps in natty, I'm inclined to think
that the graphics driver quality has improved ov

OK, this appears to be MOSTLY due to the bug #761065, referenced at:

Applying the 'fix' noted in comment #16 corrects a 'microhang' problem
that I was having that seems to have caused the 'lockup' portion of
this.

I've attached an annotated screenshot that displays the problem (see
comment #2).
I forgot to mention in the original description that the 'scroll-up'
that seemed to start the problem only occurred ONCE. A logout and
X-restart and login still has the problem, but did not give me the
visual 'scrol

A correction -- we can downgrade the severity of this bug, because a
full complete reboot seems to have 'fixed' the problem.
(No idea if this will recur or not, but at least I am, however
temporarily, back to normal.)
